DOGust 1st: Universal Birthday for Rescued Dogs

North Shore Animal League America celebrates their birthdays this weekend, and all are welcome.

Talk about the dog days of summer. This weekend pooches at North Shore Animal League America will have their day. That's because the animal league has declared "the first day of the eighth month of the year (August 1st) as DOGust the 1st - a universal birthday for shelter and rescued dogs everywhere." Joining the celebration are special  guests of honor, rescued Canadian dogs brought to the animal shelter last week.

These canines, who are between 8 months and 3 years-old, will be available for adoption beginning Saturday afternoon, July 31.  Further information about these dogs can be found at www.animalleague.org.

The celebration will feature complimentary birthday cake and refreshments including ices and smoothies, a family fun luau theme, and a "slippedy do-dah bouncer maze and dunk tank."

The weekend includes free adoptions for dogs that are one year and older. The first 40 adopters will win a free box of goodies that have been donated by Petland Discounts. All adopters will have the chance to win two passes to Hershey Park, four passes to Land of Make Believe, and an 18K white gold bracelet with a jeweled bone. Winners will be selected on Aug. 2 in a random drawing.

The celebration will take place at North Shore Animal League America, 25 Davis Avenue in Port Washington.
