No. 98: Sands Point Preserve

The backdrop for many a Port Washington memory.

offers a refuge like no other in the area.  Here, visitors have the opportunity to connect with nature and escape the frenetic pace we experience in modern suburbia. From the hiking trails to the pond to the shoreline of Long Island Sound, the preserve provides a respite.

You’ll find a slice of Gold Coast history, by visiting the Hempstead House, built by Howard Gould, and later the home of Daniel and Florence Guggenheim.  You will also find Falaise, the former home of Harry Guggenheim and Alicia Patterson, founders of Newsday.

But never mind the grandeur. Sands Point Preserve – home of the Gambol, and many a dinosaur exhibit – is the backdrop for memories steeped in local tradition for anyone born and bred in Port Washington.
