One day after the Dec. 26 blizzard, Port Washington is in the process of digging out.
The Town of North Hempstead has 100 plows clearing roads. By early afternoon, all main roads were cleared, with crews turning their attention to back roads. Residents with snow plow requests should call the town's 311 call center.
Officials are asking residents to stay off the roads. "But if they need to drive, be extremely patient behind the wheel," a town spokesman said.
The is closed. The Port Washington branch of window is open, but there is no mail delivery, as trucks could not get out because of high accumulations of snow.

Hardware stores have seen a lot of foot traffic. And they have a full supply of shovels, ice melters and so on, as those stopping into found out.
"We were busier yesterday than today," said Adam Novick, one of the owners. "I guess people prepared."
also has plenty of snow removal items in stock. The company supplies contractors with ice melters, and currently has 8,000 pounds in stock. Shovels are also in abundance, with more coming in this week.
Officials ask that residents be mindful when shoveling.
"Clear sidewalks and don't throw snow into the street," said Bob Weitzer, mayor of Port Washington North. "Rest often when shoveling."
And take care not to bury cars when shoveling, said Peter Forman, commissioner of Port Washington-Manhasset Office of Emergency Management.
In addition, Forman said, do not call police about power outages. Instead, call Long Island Power Authority at 800-490-0075. By 2:30 p.m., about 40 homes in Port Washington were without power.
