Good News: Student Wins National Google Competition; Women, Girls Donate Hair

A look at some of the inspiring headlines from around the region this week.

Here are some of the inspiring stories of the week, where community members sought to help others, or made headlines for their achievements.

Levittown Student Wins National Google Competition

A Levittown fifth grader is going to be Google famous after winning a national Doodle competition. Audrey Zhang, a student at Island Trees Middle School, was announced the winner of the seventh Doodle 4 Google competition.

The annual competition challenges students K-12 to redesign the Google logo to go along with a special theme. Inspired by this year's theme, "If I could invent one thing to make the world a better place," Audrey created a transformative water purifier that converts dirty and polluted water from rivers, lakes, and oceans, and turns it into clean drinking water.

Audrey will work with Google's team of professional "doodlers" to create the final design, which will appear on the Google homepage June 9.

Women, Girls Donate Hair at HANC Plainview Charity

Women and girls from HANC Plainview are now sporting shorter locks, having donated their hair at a recent charity event.

At the HANC Plainview Bonfire and BBQ Wednesday, more than 25 students, alumni, parents and friends cut their hair, which will be donated to Zichron Menachem, a Jerusalem-based organization that makes wigs for girls and women with cancer.  

MGV Students Spread Sunshine at Senior Center

Members of the fourth-grade select swing chorus at North Babylon's Marion G. Vedder Elementary School recently brought some sunshine to the Spangle Drive Senior Center as they visited the seniors and sang songs about spring.

Led by music teacher Lora Dellosso, the students sang “Do, Re, Mi” from “The Sound of Music” and “Rainbow Connection” from “The Muppet Movie.” 

“The senior center is one of my favorite places to take the children because they bring smiles and joy to the seniors,” Dellosso said.

Lindy Interact Club Takes Part in Teens for Jeans Campaign

The Interact Club, a community club comprised of Lindenhurst High School students, recently organized a one-week clothing drive in support of the national Teens for Jeans campaign. The campaign, organized by Dosomething.org and Aéropostale, encourages students to collect gently used jeans for teens living in local shelters.

Student Wins National Essay Contest

Jacob Bloch, a Schreiber High School junior from Port Washington, won third place in the Society of Professional Journalists national essay contest.  

SPJ aims to increase high school students' knowledge and understanding of the importance of independent media to in everyday lives.
