Governor Cuomo Declares State of Emergency

Town asks residents to move vehicles off the roads, so crews can plow.

With a blizzard hitting the region, Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency Friday afternoon. The measure gives state and local governments flexibility in coping with the storm.

Also on Friday, North Hempstead Supervisor Jon Kaiman declared a town-wide snow emergency Friday afternoon.

That means streets previously declared a snow emergency route must be cleared of parked vehicles until the emergency is lifted. The town's Highway Department is clearing all roadways to make sure streets are passable for Friday's evening commute.

“If there are areas that are impassable, we urge residents to call 311 or (516) 869-6311, and report the area to a service representative,” Kaiman said in a statement.

Residents are also asked to keep hydrants clear in case of emergencies.
