Please note the following reminders as Hurricane Irene approaches:

1) The storm is projected to intensify overnight with 40mph winds before midnight, 60 mph winds from 3am, and 75 mph winds from 8am.

2) The eye of the storm is expected to pass almost directly over us late morning.  NOTE:  During the eye, the winds will die down and THEN (an hour or two later) PICK BACK UP AGAIN TO HURRICANE FORCE WINDS.  Don’t be fooled into believing the storm has passed.

3) During the height of the storm it is very likely that fire or police will not be able to respond to a request for assistance.

That is why if you are in a low-lying area you should still consider going to one of the shelters or to friends/family.  Schreiber and Manhasset High Schools are both open as shelters.

4) Depending on many factors, there may be no electricity, cell, cable, internet, and/or landline-telephone service for a prolonged period of time.  Remember, trees that have taken down power lines cannot be cleared until power has been shut off to protect emergency workers.  Depending on the number of downed trees and lines across Long Island, it is unclear how long it will take LIPA to get to us so they can turn off the power and allow street clearing operations to begin.  We do not know in advance if this means hours, days, or even longer.

5) Be prepared to prepare food without power (think manual can-opener!)

6) Send any additional (non-emergency) questions you have to alert@northshorealert.org and we will try to reply if we can.

7) Lastly, call the Police only in the event of emergency.
