Police: Excessive Heat Watch in Port Washington

Police urge taking precautionary measures.

A dangerous heat wave is plaguing the east coast, including Port Washington, the National Weather Service reports.

The Port Washington Police District advises that the area is "under an excessive heat watch until Friday night."

In an email message, the police are warning those who live and work in Port Washington of the following:

"An excessive heat watch means that the combination of heat and humidity could create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are possible. Take extra precautions if your work or spend time outside. When possible...reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone over come by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency. Call 911 or 742-3300."

In addition, an air quality alert is in effect until 11 p.m. Thursday evening, the National Weather Service reports. Air quality alerts can affect the very young, those with asthma, heart disease and other with pre-existing respiratory problems.
