Update: Port Washington Recovery Center

Need for blankets; Free WiFi and activities at Landmark on Sunday.

Port Washington Atlantic Hook & Ladder is in need of blankets that firefighters are bringing to South Shore communities Sunday for people who need them to stay warm. The Port Washington Hurricane Recovery Community Center at Landmark on Main Street gave them the few Red Cross blankets that it had, but is now asking if anyone who has access to blankets can please bring them to the Landmark before 9:30 p.m. Saturday, preferably, or Sunday after 8 a.m.

The center is also accepting the following items for residents still without power: coats, gloves, hats, scarves, and blankets.

Additionally, we could use contributions of paper goods (plates, plastic utensils, and especially paper/plastic bowls) for the many meals we are serving here.

By 6 p.m., nearly 600 people had already stopped by the center for warmth, comfort, food and WiFi. Earlier in the day, Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel stopped by the center dressed as Big Bird, and read stories for neighborhood children.

Activities for Sunday:

  • 12-3 p.m. Acupuncture for stress relief
  • 1 p.m. Football on the big screen, with Giants game airing later in the day.
  • 1 p.m. Bingo for senior citizens.
  • 3 p.m. Science Fun for children 3-8
  • 3 p.m. Family-friendly belly dancing
  • 5 p.m. Children's movie
  • 7 p.m. Family/Teen movie
