Kaiman: Post-Sandy Update

Supervisor Jon Kaiman sent the following Reverse 311 message to all Town of North Hempstead residents with working landlines Monday evening. 

As the temperature drops, we remain concerned about those who are still without power and heat. While the Town has no control over the power restoration process, we continue to respond to the problems that come with having thousands of residents without power. We are advised by the utility that approximately 30,000 utility customers remain without power in the Town of North Hempstead.

If you know of an elderly resident who may benefit from our Project Independence staff knocking on their door and offering assistance and comfort, please call 311 with their name and we will have someone go to them as soon as we can.

The Town comfort stations remain open at the Westbury Community Center, Tully Pool in New Hyde Park and Harbor Links in Port Washington where residents can take a warm shower, charge your electronics and have a cup of coffee or hot chocolate. Tomorrow we are opening two new comfort stations, although they will not have shower capabilities, in Town Hall in Manhasset and the Great Neck Arts Center in Great Neck. There is also a community based comfort station in Port Washington at the Landmark on Main Street. Call 311 for hours of operations or directions to any of these facilities.

The PODs, or Points of Distribution, remain open in New Hyde Park, Westbury, Great Neck, and Port Washington if you need water or ready made meals. 

If you need a place to temporarily shelter your pet you may bring it to the North Hempstead Animal Shelter. You should also call us if you want to report a lost pet. I am happy to announce that we have already reunited two lost pets with their owners so far today. 

I would also like to remind everyone that tomorrow is Election Day. Polling places open at 6 a.m. and you may vote at your regular polling place. If you are not sure where your polling place is, you may call 311 for polling place locations and directions.
