North Hempstead Notebook: Beach Closing And Man of The Year

A look at recent news in North Hempstead.

Residents looking for a place to swim can forgo , at least on Sunday. 

Nassau County reported on Friday that the beach was closed to swimmers. It was closed as a precautionary measure out of concern over escalated bacteria. On Sunday the beach remained closed, as are a number of other Nassau County beaches.

Former Parks commissioner named 'Man of the Year'

Former North Hempstead Commissioner of Parks and Recreation Jerry Olsen will be honored as The Marty Lyons Foundation Man of The Year at the 26th Annual Celebrity Golf Classic. The event will take place on Monday, July 18, at Old Westbury Golf and Country Club.

The Marty Lyons Foundation is a nonprofit organization that aims to grant special wishes to children with life threatening or terminal illness. To date it has granted children more than 6,000 wishes.

“Jerry and his colleagues at the Town of North Hempstead have been steadfast in supporting the foundation in its mission,” stated Marty Lyons, founder and chairman of the foundation. “It is because of this support that the MLF has been able to grant more wishes, especially the second wishes for children in the end stage of their illnesses.”

Golf-outing registration and brunch will run from 9:30-11:30 a.m., and the cocktail and dinner reception, with award ceremony and raffle drawings, is at 5:30 p.m.
