TONH Announces Internship Opportunities

Both Town and students benefit from program.

In a weak economy, when hiring is down, students whose resumes boast work experience will have an edge when it comes to seeking full-time employment. Right now the Town of North Hempstead, through its 2011 internship program, is providing the kind of opportunity that could prove advantageous in the job market.

Students would not only gain job skills. They'll also learn how the public sector provides services.

“Serving your community and working to make a difference is certainly a noble cause,” Supervisor Jon Kaiman  noted.

According to the Town, internship opportunities include, but are not limited to, positions in the Building Department, Office of the Town Clerk, Office of the Receiver of Taxes, the Department of Information Technology, Public Relations & Media Department, the Department of Services for the Aging, and the Department of Parks and Recreation.

According to the Town, the internship program is designed to give students work-related assignments that correlate with their areas of study or general interest. Interns would gain not only work experience but also pick up skill sets and work ethic.

Qualifying students are those enrolled in a college or university or have applied to or been accepted into a degree program.  Graduate students must be currently enrolled, or accepted in a graduate program.  High school seniors are also encouraged to apply if they are 17 years of age or older at the start of the internship.

The program is on a rolling basis, "So, any time a student applies, we will evaluate," a Town spokesman said.

Interested students can apply for the program by emailing a resume and brief cover letter to internship@northhempsteadny.gov. Residents may also call 311, or (516) 869-6311, to connect to the Town's internship coordinator and ask questions about the program. Or learn more about the program by visiting northhempsteadny.gov.
