Supervisor Jon Kaiman, Councilman Fred L. Pollack and the North Hempstead Town Board announced plans to develop a blueway trail that will allow kayakers greater access to the town's expansive waterways. Town officials expect the blueway trail, which is a water path with launch points that is developed around an abundance of scenery and land based attractions, to be highly utilized by residents throughout the town.
"The blueway trail we are developing will provide a new way for the public to enjoy the town's waterfront and will further Port Washington's reputation as a spectacular waterfront destination," added Councilman Fred L. Pollack.
The proposed blueway trail, which would be the first of its kind on Long Island, would provide opportunities for recreation, environmental stewardship, education, tourism, wildlife viewing and connections to other recreational trails and areas in the town.
Supervisor Kaiman and the Town Board are seeking residents' input for ideas to make the trail a key North Hempstead attraction. Interested individuals are urged to complete the survey on North Hempstead's website at www.northhempsteadny.gov.
The proposed North Hempstead Blueway Trail project is funded in part by the New York State Department of State Division of Coastal Resources.
