Town Looks at Alternate Side of The Street Parking in Eastern Crest

A hearing for July 12 on the matter will be scheduled Tuesday evening.

Rail commuters parking in the Eastern Crest section of Port Washington  may soon have to find other options.

The may establish alternative side of the street parking restrictions for Jeannette and Annette Drives.

"The proposal is for no parking from 10:30 a.m. to noon on one side of the street and from 12:30 to 2 p.m. on the other," said North Hempstead Councilman Fred Pollack. "Presumably commuters would not be able to move their cars during these hours, so they can't park there."

The proposal comes at a time when residents say commuters block driveways and restrict emergency vehicle access.

"Eastern Crest is the only residential area close to the train station that does not have some form of parking restriction," Pollack noted on Tuesday.

Some Patch readers have said they have found nasty notes and damage to their vehicles when they've parked cars in this section. But Port Washington Police District's Deputy Chief Ron DeMeo said he didn't know of any vandalism there.

What's more, DeMeo noted that a lot of the people who park in spots other than at the train station are not from Port.

Meanwhile, the Town plans to expand parking options for commuters.

"The additional parking on S. Bayles and Haven will alleviate the problem," Pollack said. "But only for Port residents. At least some of the problem is caused by nonresidents who can't use our parking lots."

Melissa Leon contributed to the reporting.
