Port Washington Police have a message for those dropping students off at St. Johns Place behind Schreiber High School in the morning. Drop them off at the corner of Monfort Road and St. John's Place where there are stop signs.
"They are advised not to turn at the stop sign and then proceed to drive their children to the end of St. John's Place where they are observed then backing up or make a u-turn while numerous children are walking to school," said Police Commissioner Angela Mullins.
The practice of driving students all the way to St. Johns Place, police say, is an accident waiting to happen.
“Someone is going to get hit,” said Detective Anthony Guzzello.
And while a gate at the perimeter of school property is open at the start and end of the school day, police say, it is an exit only, not an entrance, for drivers after dropping off or picking up students.
So police ask parents to drop students off at the corner of Monfort Road and St. John's Place where there are stop signs.
As Mullins put it: "The safety of our children is paramount."
Drop offs....double parking, illegal parking, even parking in the fire zones. When will this be dealt with?
During school hours Rockwood becomes oneway on the side entranc to the school where officer Sandy is on duty. But parents are not lining up from one direction which is north bound instead most of the time they rush to get spot from both directions and that could cause an accident spacially in rainy on snowy days. I think all parent must line-up on highfield facing north to make right turn on Rockwood for spot on the side entrance where kids are coming out. And as they line-up the must have right signals on not hazzard line and not in park. Because the car behind should be able to know that tha car in front is not parked and is about to go for spot next. Daly school must put a sign and pass flyers of this situation or notice to parents begining of every new school year as new parents are becoming part of the prblem. I'm an architect and I can explain the matter if needs help. Thanx. Reyaz Nadi 631 742 2848 Reyaznadi@aol.com
