Port Washington School District Looks to Approve Budget

The Port Washington School Board is expected to adopt the 2013-14 school budget when it meets Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Schreiber High School.
At the April 2 meeting, the district announced that it will receive an additional $250,000 in New York State aid, which would enable the board to preserve some programs without leaning on its reserves.
During the district’s April 2 budget presentation, recommendations included restoring a full-time librarian at each school, restoring three of 17 teacher assistant positions, maintaining one staff developer, and keeping PEP in its current form.
Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Mooney is also recommending adding four additional security guards. Meanwhile the district is proposing a 3.84 percent budget increase over last year, which according to Superintendent of Business Mary Callahan, is “exactly at our tax cap limit within the formula – we have not exceeded it,” she said.
New York State has a complex formula that is applied district by district, which allows tax levies to exceed the 2 percent figure.
The board’s agenda for Wednesday’s meeting is posted on the district’s website
