Smooth Back to School Day in Port Washington

Most seem to give it the thumbs up.

The rain held off Tuesday morning, as students made their way back to school.

Parents snapped photos of their children waiting at the bus stop, while others were anxious for the bus to arrive.

“I want to get there already,” one boy told his mother, just moments before the bus to  pulled up.

As they do every year, principals and their staff greeted busloads of children, directing to them to meet their teachers and new classmates.

And yes, while many of the classrooms were warm – technically, it’s still summer after all – the first day of school seemed to go without a hitch.

“Opening day was filled with renewed energy and spirit among students and staff eager to return for a new school year,” said Interim Superintendant Dr. Kathleen Mooney.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my visits to all seven schools and was impressed with the smooth beginning at each building,” she added. “The buildings looked beautiful, the students were excited, and we are more than ready to start full days of teaching and learning.”

Some and School parents made time for the new parent breakfast, and learned about becoming involved in their children’s education.

Yet, students and parents alike may notice changes.  the 2012-13 budget, which allowed for the restoration of guidance at the elementary school level, but full-time librarian positions have not been restored. And students may notice, too, that many of the clubs at the high school level may not meet as often as they did last year.

Still, as first days go, most seemed to give it a thumbs up.

"I think it went well," said one Sousa mom, picking up her son at 3 p.m.
